Understanding IELTS Band Scores

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) uses a 9-band scale to measure English proficiency. Each band corresponds to a level of competence:

  • Band 9 — Expert User: Full command of the language. Appropriate, accurate, and fluent with complete understanding.
  • Band 8 — Very Good User: Fully operational command with only occasional inaccuracies.
  • Band 7 — Good User: Operational command. Generally handles complex language well.
  • Band 6 — Competent User: Effective command despite some inaccuracies and misunderstandings.
  • Band 5 — Modest User: Partial command. Copes with overall meaning in most situations.

How Raw Scores Convert to Band Scores

For Listening and Reading, your raw score (number of correct answers out of 40) is converted to a band score. The conversion differs between Academic and General Training for Reading:

  • Listening: 30-31 correct = Band 7.0, 35-36 = Band 8.0, 39-40 = Band 9.0
  • Reading (Academic): 30-32 = Band 7.0, 35-36 = Band 8.0, 39-40 = Band 9.0
  • Reading (General): 34-35 = Band 7.0, 38 = Band 8.0, 40 = Band 9.0

Writing and Speaking are assessed by human examiners using detailed band descriptors across 4 criteria each. Writing criteria: Task Achievement, Coherence & Cohesion, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range & Accuracy. Speaking criteria: Fluency & Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range & Accuracy, Pronunciation.

Tips to Improve Each IELTS Component

  • Listening: Practice with BBC podcasts and TED talks. Focus on predicting answers before audio plays.
  • Reading: Practice skimming/scanning techniques. Read the questions first, then find answers in the passage.
  • Writing: Learn essay structures (introduction → 2-3 body paragraphs → conclusion). Practice paraphrasing the question, not copying it.
  • Speaking: Record yourself answering Part 2 cue cards. Aim for 2 minutes of continuous speech. Use our AI Writing Checker for feedback.
